2006 - Week 4 - Movie 7 - Valiant (2005)

I'd bought this DVD sight unseen, merely because as far as Disney goes I'm a completist.

While I had a couple of days off in a row, I decided to sit down for this one as my dinner movie. I wasn't that impressed with it.

The animation is that CGI-computer stuff, but it seems so flat in places, though the backgrounds were incredible and very lifelike.

I thought the story was kind of odd. Not only was it a movie about WWII, but it was a British movie about WWII. Of course, there was Nazi characters (though not humans, but falcons), through they never really referred to them as such.

I also had to wonder at later scenes taking place in the falcon's stronghold which included a series of shots of dead pigeons that had been taxidermed. I thought that was pretty gruesome for what is supposed to be a family film.

Of course, unlike most Disney films, there was no music, though I wouldn't have expected these characters, based on military aviators, to burst into song. It was also not done by Disney themselves. It was done by a secondary company, not even a subsidiary company and Disney merely distributed it. I don't see there being head characters at the theme parks any time soon. I don't foresee Maia, for instance, clamoring to someday meet Valiant in the same way she is with Mickey and friends, the various Disney characters, and Nemo.

Overall, storywise, it was a good diversion but I don't really see myself picking this out of the pile often.
